NDCP, DKI APCSS Webinar Focuses on Pandemic Strategies and PH-US Relations

The National Defense College of the Philippines (NDCP) and the Hawai-based Daniel K Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies (DKI APCSS) jointly organized the third session of its webinar series on 24 June 2020, Wednesday, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM via Microsoft Teams.
The first half of the webinar featured Prof Deon Canyon PhD DBA of the DKI APCSS who delivered a lecture on “National Pandemic Strategies: Lessons from Europe”.
MGen Restituto F Padilla Jr AFP (Ret), Spokesperson of the National Task Force (NTF) against COVID19, was the Discussant.
During the webinar’s second half, Prof Clarita R Carlos PhD, Executive Director of the StratSearch Foundation Inc, delivered a presentation on “Revisiting the PH-US Relations: Prospects and Challenges in a post-COVID19 World”.
Prof Virginia B Watson PhD from DKI APCSS was the Discussant.
In his Welcome Remarks, NDCP President BGen Archimedes H Viaje AFP (Ret) PhD MNSA CESE underscored the timeliness and relevance of the webinar’s topics as the College intends to generate policy inputs on how the Philippines’ bilateral relations with the US can navigate uncertain and complex geopolitical realities which are further complicated by the COVID19 pandemic.
DKI APCSS Director RAdm (ret) Peter A Gumataotao, in his Closing Remarks, called attention on the Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT) saying the choice is not up to US or to China but it is on the Philippines alone to decide on the strategic way ahead and which partner it wants to work with in the future.
The 112 participants who joined the discussion are composed of NDCP officials, faculty, members of the Master in National Security Administration (MNSA) program Regular Class 55 and graduates of the Senior Executive Course on National Security (SECNS), Executive Course on National Security (ECNS) and other short courses. DKI-APCSS officials, faculty and Filipino alumni, government officials and members of the academe were also invited to attend.
