NDCP, NIDS host the 21st ARF HDUCIM

The National Defense College of the Philippines (NDCP) and the National Institute of Defense Studies (NIDS), Japan co-chaired the 21st ASEAN Regional Forum Heads of Defense Universities/Colleges/Institutions Meeting (ARF HDUCIM) with a theme “Defense Diplomacy through Education and Research: Building Confidence, Enhancing Engagement.” The event was held from 18 to 19 September 2017 at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza in Pasay City.
NDCP President Admiral Roberto Q Estioko AFP (ret) PhD MNSA and NIDS Mr Tatsuo Yamamoto co-chaired the meeting. It was the second time that the Philippines hosted the ARF HDUCIM. The first was held in the country in 1997.
During the meeting, the delegates examined the evolving regional security landscape of the Asia Pacific and discussed education and research as components of defense diplomacy. They also exchanged views on the avenues of cooperation among Defense Universities, Colleges, and Institutions.
Senator Loren Legarda, Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, and Secretary Delfin Lorenzana of the Department of National Defense graced the opening and closing ceremonies, respectively.
A total of 85 delegates from across the Asia Pacific participated in the conference. The ASEAN Secretariat also sent representatives for the said meeting.
