The National Defense College of the Philippines (NDCP) and the Pacific Forum Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), a nonprofit, private, foreign policy research institute based in Hawaii will conduct a workshop entitled, “Maritime Security in Southeast Asia: Information Sharing and Maritime Domain Awareness” on 29-31 January 2012 at the Diamond Hotel, Roxas Boulevard, Manila, Philippines.

The workshop series is organized to provide a platform for collaboration among security professionals from around the Asia-Pacific region in discussing a broad range of policy issues related to maritime security in Southeast Asia. The initial workshop will focus on facilitating maritime domain awareness among key actors and stakeholders in the region. Additional areas such as maritime environment and safety, governance, and defense will be tackled in subsequent workshops.

The activity will be participated by over 40 participants, including subject matter experts from the different parts of the Region and local representatives of relevant government, academic, private, and military institutions.

Eighty percent (80%) of Southeast Asia is covered by water. Fifty percent (50%) of all commercial sea trade is delivered through these waters. Accordingly, there is a need for shared principles and collaborative efforts among Southeast Asian Countries and the rest of the world in order to sustain and secure maritime domain and ocean-based economic activities in the Region.
