A total of 40 project team members attended the 5-day seminar on project management at the National Defense College of the Philippines (NDCP).
The NDCP, through its Defense Management Institute (DMI), in partnership with the Department of National Defense (DND), conducted the 1st Project Management Seminar for Practitioners on 5 – 7 & 12 – 13 December 2007 at the NDCP Honor Hall, Camp General Emilio Aguinaldo, Quezon City.
“It is necessary to equip project team leaders with the core competencies on project management to help them successfully implement projects under the DND-wide Philippine Defense Reform (PDR) program, ” said NDCP President Commodore Carlos L Agustin, AFP (Ret).
The first of a series of training for project management practitioners, the seminar was highly interactive and experiential, combining lectures with learning events and software exercises. In coordination with the Project Management Institute (PMI), the DMI developed a module designed specifically to cater to the needs of project management practitioners involved in PDR projects.
DND Undersecretary for Internal Affairs Ariston V delos Reyes said, “To ensure the delivery of positive results for the different PDR priority programs, the PDR Office recognizes the importance of developing a core competency on effective project management which will enable them to formulate, implement and see through the completion of SMART Plans.”
SMART plans are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-bound.
The PDR provides the framework for introducing a comprehensive, institutional, structural and systemic reform package at the strategic level for the defense and military establishment.
A total of 240 project team members are expected to undergo the 5-day seminar for Practitioners in 6 batches.
Another 120 project team leaders will undergo the 2-day seminar for Executives in 6 batches.
Established on 12 August 1963, the NDCP is the government’s key education institution for training and research on defense and security. Through the DMI (formerly the Institute for Extramural and Continuing Studies or IECS), the NDCP undertakes extension programs consisting of short- and medium-term courses, seminars, workshops, conferences, lecture series and forums on national security. The DMI, headed by Ms Charithie Joaquin, is one of the three institutes under the Department of Research and Special Studies (DRSS) led by Commodore Mariano S Sontillanosa, AFP (Ret). [Maru Aguilar]
