NDCP to discuss the role of the military in the 2010 elections

The National Defense College of the Philippines (NDCP), through its Defense Management Institute (DMI), will conduct a Roundtable Discussion (RTD) on “The Role of the Military in the 2010 Elections” on Wednesday, 10 February 2010, from 2:00 to 5:00 PM, at the NDCP Honor Hall, Camp General Emilio Aguinaldo, Quezon City.
Per Resolution No 8741 of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC), the AFP is deputized for the exclusive purpose of “ensuring free, orderly, honest, peaceful and credible elections.”
National Security Adviser and Acting Secretary of National Defense Norberto Gonzales recently underscored the need to “redefine the role of the AFP during elections to check private armed groups in many areas of the country and to prevent a repeat of the Maguindanao tragedy.”
Invited RTD speakers include COMELEC Commissioner Gregorio Y Larrazabal, Former COMELEC Chair Atty Christian S Monsod and AFP Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations J3 Maj Gen Gaudencio S Pangilinan AFP.
A total of seventy (70) participants are expected to attend the RTD. Participants include the members of the Master of National Security Administration (MNSA) Regular Class 45 and representatives from the DND, the AFP, various government agencies and non-government organizations (NGOs).
Established on 12 August 1963, the NDCP is the government’s key education institution for training and research on defense and security. Through the DMI, the NDCP undertakes extension programs consisting of short- and medium-term courses, seminars, workshops, conferences, lecture series and forums on national security. Short- courses include the Seminar on Conflict Management and Resolution, Young Leaders Program (YLP) and Project Management Seminar for Executives and Practitioners. Tasked to extend the reach of the College, the DMI is one of the three institutes under the Department of Research and Special Studies (DRSS) headed by Commodore Mariano S Sontillanosa AFP (Ret).
