The National Defense College of the Philippines (NDCP), through the Research and Special Studies Division (RSSD), conducted a forum on “Healing and Managing Gender-based Trauma in the Philippine Defense Sector” on 4 December 2023 at NDCP.
This forum is part of NDCP’s observance of the 18-day Campaign to End Violence Against Women (VAW) which aims to acknowledge the presence of gender-based trauma in the country’s defense sector as well as further raising awareness about its characteristics and ways to help its victims. The forum showcased expert speakers to discuss even the most sensitive aspects of the theme: Col Arlene A Fragé PA, Chief, Armed Forces of the Philippines Gender and Development Office (AFPGADO); Atty. Mylen Gonzales-Esquivel, Executive Director, Child Justice League Inc.; and Mr. Ron Julius Espada, Espada Psychological Consultancy
In his closing remarks, Mr. Aldrin C Cuña, MNSA, Executive Vice President of NDCP, further reaffirmed NDCP’s commitment to gender and development initiatives and hoped that the activity contributed to the sense of healing for the survivors of gender-based trauma in the defense sector and even the wider society.
At the sideline of the forum, an exhibit showing empowered women from the defense sector was also on display. The exhibit featured women taking dual roles of serving the military while being a mother to their respective families.
