The National Defense College of the Philippines (NDCP) held the Roundtable Discussion (RTD) on Nuclear Disarmament and Non-Proliferation on 25 July 2018 at the NDCP Honor Hall, Camp General Emilio Aguinaldo, Quezon City.
The RTD covered the historical background and existing international treaties and conventions pertaining to nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, as well as developments in promoting disarmament, non-proliferation, and peaceful use of nuclear technology.
The RTD featured subject matter experts on the political and scientific dimensions of the use of nuclear technology, namely, Dr Amado M Mendoza Jr of the University of the Philippines (UP), Diliman; Ms Julieta E Seguis of the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI); Ms Maria Cristina B Exmundo of the National Security Council (NSC); and Engr Geri Geronimo R Sañez of the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB).
In his closing remarks, NDCP President RAdm Roberto Q Estioko AFP (Ret) PhD MNSA underscored the importance of upholding international norms on disarmament and non-proliferation. He highlighted the detrimental effects of nuclear proliferation, which poses an imminent threat to the world. He also underscored international cooperation as a means to realize a world that is free from the threats of nuclear disaster.
A total of 52 participants from civilian government agencies, military, academe, and non-government organizations participated in the RTD. DND Undersecretary for Policy Ricardo A David Jr also graced the event.
In line with its mandate, the NDCP conducts policy fora in order to, among others, provide a platform of dialogue among experts in both the public and private sectors.
